Georgie Power implements drone technology to assist with inspections

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — Being left in the dark when your power goes out can really wreck your plans. Georgia Power is using drone technology to spot potential problems.

According to Georgia Power officials, the electric company provides power to millions of homes and businesses throughout the state. Thousands of miles of transmission lines have to be inspected and that’s where the drones come in.

Line Support Supervisor of Georgia Power, Travis Watts, says the job of an electric company’s lineman before drone technology was not easy.

“We would bring the line crews out and they would either have to climb these structures or they would have to set up a very large bucket truck. You can imagine it was a very tedious process, a very time-consuming process, putting them in the more hazardous environment when they had to climb the structured and go up near the lines with the lines energized,” Watts said…
