Barbecue has a long history in the South, with almost every Southerner probably having at least a dozen happy memories involving the cuisine at a family event.
A large part of that history in the Chattahoochee Valley has involved this Phenix City restaurant:
Chicken Comers Bar-B-Que was started in 1929 in the midst of the Great Depression out of the house of Anderson “Uncle Chicken” Comer. After a hiatus of over 17 years, when Phenix City went without this restaurant, the current Phenix City location opened in August 2017.
My father told me that his father used to talk about eating at a place called Chicken Comers. So, it was nice to know I might be eating the same style of BBQ my paternal grandfather ate all those years ago when he was stationed at Fort Benning in the 1960s…
