An Ohio man will spend nearly four years in federal prison after selling a semiautomatic rifle and hundreds of rounds of ammunition to an undercover informant in Florida.
Russell Renney, 51, was sentenced to 46 months by U.S. District Judge Sheri Polster Chappell, according to an announcement made Tuesday by U.S. Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe. The sentencing comes roughly six months after Renney entered a guilty plea on December 4, 2025, for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
Federal court documents reveal that the investigation began when Renney reached out to an informant working alongside the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to offer a firearm for sale.
