License plates rejected by Ohio to get a second look after court ruling

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio Bureau of Moter Vehicles has a daunting task ahead after a federal court ordered a review of the thousands of rejected vanity license plates following a civil rights lawsuit.

The suit, filed in May by plaintiffs William Saki, Jeffrey Wonser, and Patrick Corrigan, accused the BMV of various constitutional and statutory violations stemming rejection of their vanity plate applications the bureau deemed as improper.

From June 2025 to June 2026, the Ohio BMV rejected more than 925 license plates, many of which attempted to discreetly reference profane or inappropriate material. The arose from the BMV’s refusal to allow plates that read “GAY” and “MUSLIM”…
