Dozens saw the shootout, but 5 years later, no arrest in Makenzi Ridley rec center killing

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Five years after 17-year-old Makenzi Ridley was shot and killed outside the Far East Rec Center, her family is still waiting for answers as the shooter remains at large and no arrests have been made.

Police said Ridley had just graduated high school and was at a gathering of young people for a squirt gun fight on June 24, 2021, when she was struck by a bullet during an exchange of gunfire between two groups.

Her mother, Seneca Ridley, said she typically marks the anniversary by traveling. “I usually spread Makenzi’s ashes in another country, that’s what I’ve been doing for the last several years,” she said.
