MICHIGAN — Southeast Michigan and northwest Ohio are set to see a soaking rain today, with 2 to 4 inches possible across the region. The heaviest rain will fall in southeast Michigan, especially back toward the Coldwater area early in the day, before this pocket of heavy rain slowly migrates along the Ohio-Michigan border toward Lake Erie this morning. A lost steering current in the atmosphere means the downpours will move slowly, wringing out the moisture that has built up in the air this week.
Heaviest Rain Targets Adrian, Toledo and Monroe
Radar shows the most intense rainfall currently tracking across Adrian, Toledo and Monroe, with embedded lightning within the heaviest cells. This corridor is expected to see the highest rainfall totals as the slow-moving system continues to wring out heavy downpours through the morning.
Detroit and Kingsville sit near the northern edge of the heaviest rain shield, though still within the broader 2 to 4 inch rainfall potential zone.
Slow Steering Currents Mean Extended Rainfall Duration
With the atmosphere lacking a strong steering current, the heavy rain is moving slowly across the region rather than pushing through quickly. This slow movement increases the risk of higher rainfall totals accumulating in any one location as cells repeatedly track over the same areas.
Bowling Green, Findlay and Tiffin are also within the path of this slow-moving rain shield as it continues tracking toward Lake Erie.
