HILLIARD, Ohio (WCMH) — Hilliard is imposing new rules for bicycles, electric bicycles and other low-speed mobility devices beginning Wednesday, including a helmet requirement for riders younger than 18.
City Council unanimously approved the changes Aug. 24 after the city received “significant feedback” from residents concerned about children riding e-bikes and scooters.
Under the rules, anyone younger than 18 must wear a helmet while riding a bike, e-bike or low-speed mobility device on a roadway, sidewalk or shared-use path. Hilliard previously required helmets only for people operating or riding on Class 3 e-bikes, which provide pedal assistance at speeds of up to 28 mph.
