Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine mourns Haitian man at Springfield funeral

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine attended the funeral Saturday of Pierre Damas Bel, a young Haitian man who died by suicide in August after his family said he was bullied for wearing an immigration ankle monitor.

DeWine did not speak during the two-hour service at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, but he and first lady Fran DeWine met privately with Bel’s family before. The governor said they came as parents who also know the pain of losing a child.

DeWine’s daughter, Becky, died in a car crash in 1993…
