Tennessee failed to execute Christa Pike. Ohio has its own history of botched executions

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Tennessee’s failed attempt to execute Christa Pike is among the latest botched executions in U.S. history, which includes multiple incidents in Ohio.

Pike, 50, was scheduled to be executed on Sept. 30 at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville, Tennessee. However, after receiving two lethal doses of pentobarbital, she was still breathing and was transported to a local hospital. Her attorneys said on Oct. 1 that she was in critical condition.

In 1996, a jury found Pike, 18 at the time, guilty of torturing and murdering her classmate, 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, who she believed was interested in her boyfriend. Pike carried out the attack with her boyfriend on Jan. 12, 1995, while her friend acted as a lookout. See NBC4’s latest headlines in the video player above.…
