W.Va., Ohio leaders warn aging bridges threaten economic growth, urge upgrades

WEIRTON, W.Va. — A growing chorus of local leaders is raising concerns about aging bridges that connect West Virginia and Ohio, warning that long-term economic growth in the Ohio Valley could hinge on keeping key crossings safe and planning for future replacements.

Several area bridges are nearing the end of their usable life or need major work to remain safe. Problems have been seen on the now-closed Market Street Bridge, and the Veterans Memorial Bridge has had lane closures for months. The Jennings Randolph Bridge in Chester is also among the aging structures drawing attention.
