COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) — The greatest skateboarder of all time stopped by central Ohio to see the newly renovated skatepark designed by his dad.
NBC4’s Whitney Harding exclusively caught up with Tony Hawk, who was in Columbus Tuesday morning and visited Dodge Park Skate Park, which recently reopened after it closed for restorations. Hawk’s father, Frank, designed and constructed Columbus’ Dodge Park Skatepark in 1990. The city began repairs of the park in May and it recently reopened earlier in January.
Even though Hawk’s final destination Tuesday was Athens to speak at Ohio University’s Kennedy Lecture Series, he said he had to make a “mandatory stop” at the skatepark for the first time in two years.
“There is some concrete, literally concrete evidence of his legacy because he you know, he did a lot for skateboarding, but he never got to really design a skate space,” said Hawk. “And so this is really special. You know, he’s a bit of an anomaly that was passed to him. But I’m really proud of it.”
