POWELL, Ohio ( WCMH ) — A black bear who was known as a rock star in the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s North America region has died.
Joan, an eight-year-old black bear, was euthanized after it was discovered two weeks she could no longer use her hind legs, the Columbus Zoo announced in a Facebook post on Friday. Despite being particular about people and treats, Joanie voluntarily participated in her own medical care, endearing herself to her favorite keepers and trusted vet tech.
“Joan was not just an ordinary bear; she had a unique personality that kept her caretakers on their toes,” the zoo said. “From her agile young cub days to becoming a true rock star in training, Joan had a special place in our hearts.”
The black bear arrived at the Columbus Zoo in 2016 after being orphaned and deemed non-releasable by Montana Fish and Game. Over the years, Joan had already captured the hearts of guests and staff alike with her spirited personality, the zoo said.
