A Historic Election: Franklin County May Soon Have Its First Black Prosecutor

Though he ran as a reform candidate, Franklin County Prosecutor Gary Tyack didn’t turn out to be a transformational leader. He didn’t become the progressive force that some community activists expected after the Democrat’s 2020 upset of Republican Ron O’Brien, Franklin County’s longest-serving prosecutor. Instead, some began to view Tyack as a transitional figure. “As people started to complain about it, I said, ‘You know, getting Ron O’Brien out was phase one, and phase two will be looking for a 21st century prosecutor to replace Tyack,’ ” says activist and former Columbus City Council candidate Adrienne Hood.
