Officer hit by car in north Columbus, suspect shot

COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) — A Columbus police officer was injured and a suspect shot after allegedly hitting the officer with a stolen car Wednesday in north Columbus.

According to Columbus Police spokesman Sgt. Joe Albert, the incident started when a 911 caller reported seeing their stolen car, a 2015 Toyota Camry, on East Dublin Granville Road.

After locating the vehicle, officers attempted to stop the car near Beechcroft Road and Clintonview Street, but the car fled the scene. Police decided not to pursue the vehicle, Albert said.

About 20 minutes later, at 3:51 p.m., officers located the Camry in the parking lot of a gas station on the 900 block of East Dublin Granville Road. The car then left the parking lot and drove to the Huntley Square Shopping Center, where officers were able to pin the vehicle inside the center’s parking lot by blocking the exits.

“At one point, the vehicle was backing up and then abruptly drives forward in an aggressive manner and strikes one of our sergeants,” Albert said. “Our sergeant ended up on the hood of the vehicle while the vehicle was driving through the parking lot. That sergeant deployed their firearm, discharged their firearm several times, striking the driver of the vehicle.”
