Photo book shows beauty of local cemeteries

Cemeteries stretch out over miles of the landscape in Ohio, but we often drive by without paying them any attention.

Columbus-based photographer and writer Randall Lee Schieber and Robin L. Smith, along with Cuyahoga Falls-based photographer Ian Adams, have set out to bring our eyes back to Earth with their new book, “This Place of Silence: Ohio’s Cemeteries and Burial Grounds,” which includes photographs of cemeteries in all of Ohio’s 88 counties, some focusing on architectural or sculptural details and some on broader landscapes as they change through the seasons and bringing attention to these peaceful places.

The following are some of the cemeteries featured in the book, all in Franklin County and open to the public, and all worth a visit.

Green Lawn Cemetery

The cemetery, which is still in active use, celebrates its 175th anniversary this year . It was founded as part of the rural cemetery movement, where it gave city dwellers a chance to stroll and picnic, as well as visit their deceased friends and relatives on its 360 acres.
