34-year-old man shot, killed by Columbus police identified by Franklin County Coroner

The Franklin County Coroner’s Office has identified the man who was shot and killed early Tuesday morning by Columbus police during a confrontation in the city’s University District .

Lamine Mahmoudi, 34, was pronounced dead at 1:36 a.m. after being shot in an alley near his residence on the 200 block of Chittenden Avenue, The Dispatch previously reported.

Police had encountered Mahmoudi twice Monday night prior to the shooting, according to a division news release. The first encounter was just before 7 p.m. while responding to a report of a person, later identified as Mahmoudi, bleeding and wielding an edged weapon inside of a home on Chittenden Avenue. Columbus police and the division’s mobile crisis response unit arrived on scene and tried speaking with Mahmoudi, but he chose not to speak with them, police said. Police then left the scene, according to the release.

At around 10:24 p.m., officers responded to the same residence for a report of Mahmoudi holding a knife and threatening other occupants in the home. Officers arrived and found Mahmoudi alone in the residence. The mobile crisis unit responded for the second time and spoke to Mahmoudi by phone, but he again refused help, police said. Police left the scene again.
