Hilliard woman sentenced to prison in 2021 fatal car crash

COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) – A Hilliard woman who authorities say was under the influence of alcohol during a fatal 2021 car crash was sentenced to prison on Thursday, according to the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office.

Franklin County Common Pleas Judge Sheryl Munson sentenced Shannon Gaines, 50, to a mandatory 12 to 15 years in prison. Gaines pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide and two counts of aggravated vehicular assault.

On Dec. 2, 2021, Gaines was driving on Roberts Road between Walcutt Road and International Street, when she drove left of center into an oncoming vehicle. One of the people in the car, Carla Mavis, died from blunt force trauma, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Two other people who were in the car were treated for fractures. Investigators determined that Gaines had a .156 blood alcohol content at the time of the crash, the prosecutor’s office said.
