COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) – A man who pleaded guilty to purposely running over a pedestrian in west Columbus received his sentence in court this week.
According to court documents, 40-year-old Osman Aweys pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, with a charge of murder dropped as part of the plea, in the death of a 30-year-old man on Sept. 26, 2021.
On that day Columbus police arrived at the intersection of Sullivant Avenue and Holly Hills Drive on reports of a pedestrian struck. Officers found a man on the ground with critical injuries, and he was later pronounced dead.
Second suspect arrested in connection to North Linden homicide of 13-year-old boy
Police said the man was intentionally struck by a vehicle , which was driven by Aweys and who drove away from the scene. Aweys was arrested the following day after finding him asleep in the vehicle on Sullivant Avenue, a block away from the scene.
Aweys pleaded not guilty to murder charges in municipal court but would eventually plead guilty to the lessor charge on Monday in common pleas court.
