Columbus School for Girls honors suffragists on election eve

COLUMBUS, Ohio ( WCMH ) — With the non-stop talk of the election over the past few months, it’s hard for some people to fathom that just a little more than 100 years ago, women did not have the right to vote.

On Monday, the Columbus School for Girls recognized those who made the passage of the 19th Amendment possible.

Students marched through the school and community, echoing the suffragists’ calls to give women a voice in our republic.

School leaders said the students have been learning about the suffragist movement for the last couple of months as a way to connect the history with the concept of civic duty.

“Starting early on allows them to think about their role in voting and when we talk about the suffragists and the fact that since the founding of our country, women were speaking up about being included, it helps them to understand the importance of their role because, for a long time, women and people of color were excluded,” school librarian Annie Reufle said.
