Mother’s two-decade quest for missing son continues amid new efforts to aid Ohio families

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Judy Rafferty has spent nearly two decades grappling with the disappearance of her son, Andy Chapman, who was last seen in 2006 at the age of 32.

“Sometimes it’s just unbearable, after so many years you learn to deal with it,” Rafferty said, reflecting on the Christmases, birthdays, and special occasions she’s missed with him. “It is a rollercoaster,” she added. “You have to pretend like everything is okay on the outside, on the inside your heart is torn apart.”

Rafferty recounted that her son, who had a history of opioid addiction, called her a few days before he vanished. “He called me and I was home sick, that day unfortunately,” she said. “And he wanted me to come down, it sounded pretty important.” By the time Rafferty was able to visit, Andy was gone. A neighbor informed her that he and his two roommates had moved out. “He would always stay in contact with me,” Rafferty said.
