Columbus, Franklin County among those labeled as sanctuary jurisdictions by DHS

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — The Department of Homeland Security has designated Columbus and Franklin County as “sanctuary jurisdictions,” prompting federal demands for local governments to review and revise their policies. Cincinnati, Lorain County, and Warren County were also listed. DHS’s list currently has over 500 locations.

Mayor Andrew Ginther was unavailable for an on-camera interview, but his office provided a statement affirming the city’s stance.

“We stand firm in our belief that Mayor Ginther’s 2017 executive order remains legally sound,” the statement said in part. “The order affirms that the City of Columbus will protect the well-being and safety of everyone who lives in our city. We will not use city resources to apprehend anyone in our city solely based on immigration status, and we will not deny city services to Columbus residents, based on where they were born.”…
