Hidden Histories: Alrosa Villa’s tragic night that shook rock history

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — On December 8, 2004, the Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus became the site of a tragic event in rock history. The venue, known for hosting musical acts nationwide, was set to feature Damageplan, including ex-Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell Abbott.

As the music began, 25-year-old Nathan Gale stormed the stage with a 9mm handgun, firing 15 shots and killing Abbott, security chief Jeffrey “Mayhem” Thompson, club employee Aaron Halk, and fan Nathan Bray. Several others were wounded in the chaos. Gale took hostages on stage before being stopped by Columbus Police Officer James Niggemeyer, who entered through the back door and fatally shot Gale, preventing further bloodshed.
