NEW CIGARETTE TAX COULD SEND SMOKERS ACROSS STATE LINE

(Richmond, IN)–A new tax that went into effect Tuesday could send lots of Indiana smokers in our area across the state line to buy their tobacco products. As of Tuesday morning, the tax on a pack of cigarettes in Indiana has increased from about a dollar to about three dollars. Richmond retailers say that the new tax brings the total for a pack to anywhere between $7 and $12. At that maximum price, the smoker of a pack of cigarettes per day would spend $360 per month or more than $4000 per year supporting their habit.
