Ohio equal rights amendment clears first hurdle toward 2026 ballot

Attorney General Dave Yost accepted the title and summary for a proposed citizen-led ballot initiative on Thursday that would enshrine equal rights in the Ohio Constitution. Yost’s approval represents the first step in a process that could eventually place the measure before voters as early as next year.

Ohio Equal Rights, which is leading the ballot initiative campaign, is billing the proposal as the “most comprehensive protections for people of marginalized protections in the nation.” Organizers of the ballot initiative said they are modeling it after a similar effort in Nevada, which was approved by voters with 57% of the vote in 2022.
