COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — The city of Columbus has reported 42 homicides so far this year, marking a decrease compared to recent years.
Here is a comparison of homicide totals at the start of July the last few years:
- July 2024: 55
- July 2023: 78
- July 2022: 63
In addition to tracking homicides, Columbus authorities also are monitoring felony assault cases. According to the Columbus Police Department, 407 felony assault cases have been reported this year. A significant portion of those cases involve younger individuals, with 230 people aged 21 and younger charged with felony assault.
“I think first you identify the problem, which is doing data analysis like this collaboratively, finding out which organization can support certain data points with fidelity,” said Malissa Thomas St. Clair, the founder of Mothers of Murdered Columbus Children. “I think that’s what the solution is.”…
