Damage from bagworm outbreak visible across Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WJW) — Damage from bagworms is becoming more prevalent in Ohio, according to the Ohio State University Extension.

The office warned of a bagworm outbreak in June as the destructive caterpillars hatched across the state.

According to OSU Extension specialists, bagworm larvae (Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis) have reached a stage in their development where their feeding and the size of their protective silk-and-plant-material bags are now readily noticeable.

“Although the eggs hatched back in June, bagworms often go unnoticed for weeks,” said Joe Boggs, Extension Educator and co-author of a recent Buckeye Yard and Garden Line (BYGL) update. “By the time the damage becomes obvious, it’s often already extensive.”
