Auditor talks property tax future and fight to end it

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Property taxes have been in the spotlight and the ire of homeowners for the last few years, through the pandemic, with the housing price fluctuations, and now a local movement to abolish them altogether in Ohio is gaining support.

WKBN 27 First News checked in with Mahoning County Auditor Ralph Meacham to talk about property taxes, the outcome of those revaluations that took place in 2023, and how the process went for those who wanted to appeal the nearly 38% price hike.

“So, the re-eval was done in ’23, and it affected the payments for ’24. In the year of the re-eval, when the new values were applied, we had 330 Board of Revision request hearings,” Meacham said. “Our numbers were not nearly as high as many others, I mean, the large counties had thousands of these board of revision requests. We didn’t have that many.”…
