‘Celebrity dentist’ Scott Schumann won’t face criminal charges in patient death

The Franklin County Prosecutor’s office has decided not to file criminal charges against a Grove City dentist whose patient died following a four-hour appointment Feb. 13.

Grove City police Lt. Jason Stern said detectives were informed that prosecutors decided not to present the case to a grand jury to pursue an indictment against Scott Schumann, whose license with the Ohio State Dental Board had twice been suspended for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Schumann surrendered his license June 11.

An email to police from Bob Krapenc, Franklin County first-assistant prosecutor, stated: “I do not believe there is sufficient evidence to charge Schumann with reckless homicide, as we would need to prove that (he) knew that there was a significant possibility that his actions would cause the death … and he disregarded it. It is notenough to show that he ‘should have known’ about the risk.”…
