Back in 1982 in Ohio, his father, Mark Turner, and his uncle, Ken Smith, set out to bring something new to the fast-casual world. At a time when food courts were dominated by reheated staples and cookie-cutter menus, they introduced Steak Escape: sizzling onions on a hot grill, steak cooked fresh right in front of you, and cheesesteaks that felt like a taste of Philadelphia transported anywhere in America.
