Opinion: Ohio’s Next Governor Needs to be a Woman

Ohio, in its history, has had one female Governor. Nancy Hollister only served for 11 days. However, next year Ohioans will have the opportunity to make Dr. Amy Acton the state’s first elected female governor, and they absolutely must.

I do not believe Acton should be elected just because she is a woman. I believe she should be elected because she has already proven her ability to make real change for Ohioans and is the most qualified for the job. Acton previously served as the Ohio Department of Health Director, gaining first-hand experience working under current Governor Mike DeWine. It was her leadership during the pandemic that saved lives and led to Governor DeWine describing Acton as a hero in a white coat.

The current Republican leadership has failed to help working Ohioans, and Governor DeWine has led Ohio in the wrong direction. The state has ranked 45th in GDP growth between 2021 and 2023 and ranked in the lower half of states for GDP per capita in 2024. With Ohio residents facing soaring energy costs and greater cost of living across the board, what has DeWine done recently to fix this? He has supported a budget that reduces funding for public education and spent Ohio tax dollars investing in Intel factories that remain incomplete…
