Ohio Utility Scandal Settlement: What the $186 Million Refund Means for Local Residents

In October 2025, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio fined FirstEnergy’s three regulated companies $250 million for their involvement in a utility corruption case. The penalty follows more than five years of efforts by consumer groups related to the HB 6 bribery scheme.

Of the total fine, more than $186 million will be refunded or credited to Ohio consumers.
