Ohio school cellphone ban goes into effect Jan. 1

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — As part of the state budget passed over the summer, school districts across Ohio must ban the use of cellphones and smart devices in schools statewide on Jan. 1.

Students have a few days of school left before they go on winter break, and when they come back in 2026, the new phone ban will officially be state law.

Many districts in central Ohio have already implemented the ban. Columbus Board of Education President Michael Cole said the district has had a strict phone policy since 2015.
