Columbus residents protest increased ICE activity

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Social media has been buzzing and we have received many reports of increased activity by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents throughout Franklin County. On Saturday, two events were hosted with similar agendas: denouncing ICE’s presence and sharing resources.

“We’re doing what we can to support them, to let them know they’re not alone,” said Kira Toliver, Organizer with PSL Columbus.

At the Columbus Liberation Center, the city’s branch of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, a liberal leaning organization, hosted what they called an emergency meeting. The building was filled to capacity with a long line of people also waiting outside. The crowd heard from community advocates and lawyers about what rights people have surrounding immigration reform such as not having to open the door without a warrant or sign anything an ICE agent presents to you.

“If they’re out in the community, if they’re out in the grocery store, gas station, whatever, and they see who they’d suspect to be an ICE agent trying to kidnap or detain somebody, we want to let them know what their rights are in those situations,” Toliver said…
