Ohio health department investigates Legionnaires’ outbreak at Christ Hospital

CINCINNATI (WXIX) – The Ohio Department of Health is investigating a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak at Christ Hospital that has resulted in three deaths among six reported cases since October.

The outbreak was first identified in October when testing of the hospital’s water identified Legionella bacteria, which can grow in complex water systems and are not spread from person to person. Infection occurs by breathing in microscopic water droplets.

Hospital implements safety measures

The initial cases prompted an investigation, including a site visit from Ohio Department of Health surveyors. In response, the hospital took steps to institute widespread filtration, according to a health department statement.

When additional cases were identified in December 2025, it prompted further investigation by both the Ohio Department of Health and Cincinnati Health Department, including a second site visit by state surveyors. The hospital has since taken additional measures, including chlorination.
