COLUMBUS, Ohio — Those familiar with Schiller Park also know the Umbrella Girl statue. That statue has become home to a tradition that carries a bit of mystery around a red coat or cape.
Visitors to Schiller Park during the winter months will notice the bronze statue dons a red cape. The mystery of the cape is that nearly no one knows who puts it there every year.
“I’ve come to learn a little bit of the origin story, but somebody who had a knowledge of presentation, of fashion, of whatever realized she needs a little something,” said Katharine Moore, the president of the Friends of Schiller Park. “So the first year came and there was a red coat with a little white collar and the neighborhood just went crazy and it happened again and again.”…
