Columbus school board critiques superintendent, alleges grant dollars went unspent

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — After a tumultuous year, the Columbus City Schools Board of Education criticized Superintendent Angela Chapman in her annual review.

The board had its first meeting of 2026 on Tuesday night, and the first since issuing Chapman’s annual review on Dec. 19. In her review, board members said Chapman needed to improve on her collaboration with the board and claimed she let millions of grant dollars go unspent.

The review followed a tricky year for the district, the largest in Ohio, culminating in $50 million budget cuts. On Dec. 2, the Board of Education cut administrative positions, some nonpersonnel spending and busing for K-8 grade students who choose to attend a school different than the one they are assigned to by location. The board also voted to close four school and said it will cut $25 million through staffing reductions that have not yet been completed.
