Study: Race stands as large barrier for affordable living in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Columbus has been able to attract new businesses and residents largely due to its affordability and geographic location; however, recent data shows that growth is not equally beneficial for the city’s residents.

“Columbus is a place where you have a significant level of population and economic growth. But what we have seen in the data is that growth trajectory is disproportionately impacted,” said Duwain Pinder, a partner and researcher for McKinsey and Company, a management consulting firm that has produced significant research on income and inequalities in America.

Pinder co-authored research on 3,000 counties in America across 25 metrics, including education, health and housing. Their overall summary: There is no city or region in the nation where Black households fare better economically than their white neighbors.

“Columbus’s racial disparities in terms of the Franklin County area are much larger than the general population,” Pinder said. “Columbus is in the bottom 25th percentile relative to all the other counties across the country in terms of the size of the racial disparities.”…
