Suspected hypothermia contributes to 6 deaths, Franklin County Coroner’s Office says

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — Suspected hypothermia is believed to have contributed to six deaths amid a recent cold stretch in central Ohio, according to the Franklin County Coroner’s Office.

Four men and two women died between Jan. 24 and Feb. 2 across parts of Franklin County. Two of the deaths occurred inside of a residence and three occurred outside of a residence, according to the coroner’s office. One of the deaths was a homeless individual.

The coroner’s office confirmed the following deaths:

  • Alan Johns, 79, Upper Arlington – Died Jan. 24
  • Derek Siela, 55, Columbus – Died Jan. 29
  • Ronnie Bevins, 61, Columbus – Died Jan. 31
  • Ronald Wyckoff, 91, Canal Winchester – Died Jan. 31
  • Sharon Evans, 79, Columbus – Died Feb. 1
  • Patricia Lanning, 73, Blacklick – Died Feb. 2

High temperatures between Jan. 24 and Feb. 2 largely remained in the teens, only reaching the 20s twice, on Feb. 1 and Feb. 2. A cold weather advisory was in place for Jan. 29 and Feb. 1, with an extreme cold warning on Jan. 31, when temperatures reached as low as -9 degrees…
