Former property manager to appear in court on theft, fraud charges tied to apartments

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — A former property manager accused of exploiting Haitian immigrants by renting out apartments listed as vacant is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.

Sylvia Sherman, the former property manager of the Colonial Village Apartments on the East Side, faces charges of theft, money laundering, telecommunications fraud and engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity.

Prosecutors say Sherman rented apartments that were listed as “vacant” to around 1,300 Haitian immigrants who were in the U.S. under Temporary Protected Status. The apartments were described as being in terrible condition, with no heat, hot water or smoke detectors…
