City’s Plan to Buy 50-Acre Woods for Park Stymied by Price Hike

A plan to buy a large, mostly untouched tract of land on the Hilltop and preserve it as public green space is now on hold after the owner raised the price tag.

The City of Columbus in late 2024 was awarded a Clean Ohio Conservation Program grant to purchase the site, which is located east of Whitethorne Avenue and south of Mound Street.

Officials with the city’s Recreation and Parks Department told CU at the time that they would work with residents to come up with a plan for the heavily-wooded piece of land that could involve adding trails and access points, but that preservation was the main priority…
