A pedestrian suffered critical injuries Thursday night after being struck by a vehicle on Hammond Road in Mecca, in the 67000 block north of Johnson Street. The crash was reported just before 8:40 p.m., and the victim was rushed to the hospital, according to authorities.
Details on the crash remain limited, as reported by KESQ, which said it had reached out to the California Highway Patrol for additional information and would provide updates as they become available. Because Mecca is an unincorporated community without its own police department, primary responsibility for investigating the collision falls to the California Highway Patrol’s Indio Area office, which covers unincorporated corridors throughout the Eastern Coachella Valley.
The stretch of Hammond Road where the crash occurred sits near a Coachella Valley Water District facility and falls within a state-designated Assembly Bill 617 environmental justice community, according to filings with the South Coast Air Quality Management District. That designation reflects the area’s history of underinvestment in infrastructure, a gap local and state agencies have been working to close in recent years.
