As of late September 2026, my house here in Riverside is still waiting on the first cold night that sends me out to the garage for the space heater. For years I set mine on the bedroom floor, switched it on and went to sleep. If it tipped over, it would shut itself off. That was the whole safety plan in my house here in California.
The City of Riverside’s own winter weather page doesn’t leave room for that plan. Its space heater advice is short: “Never leave space heaters unattended.” There’s no exception for a heater with a tip-over switch.

What CPSC says
The Consumer Product Safety Commission’s safety alert on portable electric heaters says it outright: “Never leave the heater operating while unattended, or while you are sleeping.” The same alert says that if ignition results from a heater left on and unattended, a major fire could result.
Why the switch doesn’t cover it
CPSC describes the tip-over protection plainly: an automatic cut-off device is now required, and it turns off electric or kerosene heaters if they tip over. That is what the switch is for. A heater that stays upright is not what it’s built to catch…
