You wrap your outdoor AC unit in plastic, but your utility offers a $25 rebate for an HVAC maintenance tune-up.

In Riverside, I know the fall reflex: pull a plastic cover tight over the outdoor AC unit and feel as though the job is done. I used to think that if rain and debris could not get in, the machine would be better off. As of mid-September 2026, with the first rain still on my mind, I am looking at that cover differently. Here in California, we can mistake sealing something up for taking care of it.

The cover is an easy answer to a visible problem. Leaves and other debris can land on an outdoor unit; plastic looks like a clean barrier. But it matters whether that barrier covers just the top or wraps the whole unit without letting moisture out. Riverside Public Utilities says service technicians usually have more time to schedule maintenance calls from October through February.
