You leave the portable air conditioner hose unattached, but GE Appliances says that leaves the room’s heat inside

I’m Marisol Ochoa. In my Riverside ranch house, as of mid-September 2026, I still understand the temptation to run a portable air conditioner with its exhaust hose lying loose. It is tempting to assume the unit will cool the room anyway. I used to judge it that way in my own house: if the breeze felt cold, I figured the room was getting cooler.

Here in California, hot weather makes that quick test especially appealing. In Riverside, Riverside Public Utilities recommends room fans to help people feel cooler on hot days. A fan can change how the air feels against your skin, though, and the cold stream from a portable air conditioner can be just as persuasive. Neither sensation tells you where the unit is sending the heat.
