Extreme heat, dangerous surf hit Southern California as Hurricane Rachel churns

Southern California’s stubborn October heat wave continues Wednesday as another weather threat develops along the coast, where Hurricane Rachel is helping generate elevated surf, dangerous rip currents and possible flooding.

An extreme heat warning remains in effect through 8 p.m. Thursday for parts of Los Angeles and Orange counties, while a coastal flood advisory went into effect Wednesday morning and is expected to remain in place through 1 p.m. Friday.

The combination of unusually high tides and a southerly swell generated by Hurricane Rachel could bring some of the greatest coastal flooding impacts to areas including Long Beach, Catalina Island, Malibu and Zuma Beach, according to the National Weather Service.

High tides of roughly 6 to 7 feet could inundate low-lying beach areas, parking lots, bike paths and harbor walkways…
