A California Woman Said She Was the Victim of a Hit and Run. Only Problem is She Showed Up After the Alleged Staged Accident

Five people were arrested in connection to the alleged insurance fraud scheme that may have been worth more than $30,000

A suspected insurance fraud scheme was foiled after investigators used home security footage and witness interviews to learn the alleged victim of the hit-and-run showed up after the crash occurred.

The California Department of Insurance released security footage Wednesday showing the alleged crash, which occurred in early September 2021 in Ontario.

The video appears to show an SUV pulling up to an intersection and stopping directly in the middle of the road, and the driver of the car exits the vehicle and walks away.

Shortly after, a different SUV can be seen smashing into the SUV before the driver calmly exits the vehicle toward the other driver.

Police said both drivers allegedly fled the scene, according to a release from the Department of Insurance.

A woman then allegedly called the Ontario Police Department to report the crash and claimed she was the victim of a hit-and-run. However, police were told by witnesses that she allegedly had not shown up at the scene until after the crash.
