SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — In a significant development, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) apprehended a 26-year-old man on Friday in connection to a fatal hit-and-run incident that occurred in Unincorporated San Bernardino County on November 25, 2023.
The tragic collision unfolded at approximately 6:25 a.m. at the intersection of Alabama Street and San Bernardino Avenue.
The driver of a black Kia Sportage allegedly disregarded a red light, resulting in a collision with a white Freightliner tractor-trailer.
Firefighters from the Redlands Fire Department arrived on scene and located the severely damaged Kia SUV with three occupants inside. One of the victims required extensive extrication with the jaws of life to rescue them from the mangled wreckage.
The impact claimed the lives of two female passengers in the Kia, while the driver fled the scene on foot.
After an intensive investigation, CHP investigators identified the suspect as Roberto Alvarez Rodriguez from Fontana, Calif. Subsequently, a warrant for his arrest was issued. In a collaborative effort with investigators from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Alvarez Rodriguez was apprehended on January 26, 2024.
