First Alert Weather Alert: Tracking rain and the risk of flooding

Conditions have been mild this weekend but big changes are ahead. A low-pressure system with an associated atmospheric river is continuing to move into SoCal. This push of moisture will bring scattered showers to the desert throughout Sunday to start. The main rain event will start Monday and span through the middle of the week.

First Alert Weather Alerts have been issued for Monday and Tuesday due to incoming heavier rain which could lead to flooding and hazardous driving conditions. A Flood Watch will go into effect this afternoon and last through Tuesday evening due to the risks associated with this heavier rainfall.

At this time, it is estimated that rainfall totals could reach 0.50 to 2 inches by the end of this timeframe. More rainfall is expected for areas west of the desert and for mountain communities. Mountain runoff could increase flooding risks in wash areas and the likelihood of road closures.

Riverside and San Bernardino County mountains will see heavier snowfall and stronger winds in addition to the rain. A Winter Storm Warning will remain in effect for local mountain communities through Tuesday evening. Snow levels are expected to drop to 5,500 ft. by Monday where we could see snow totals near 5-6 inches. Higher elevation areas near 7,000-8,000 ft. could see up to a foot of snow. Wind will remain an area of concern as gusts could reach an upwards of 60 mph. These conditions are likely to make commuting very difficult. Drive with extra care.
