Man who died after Indio crash Sunday identified

Authorities on Monday identified a 29-year-old man who died after being injured in a collision in Indio over the weekend.

The Riverside County coroner’s office identified him as Yordi Jose Del Toro Mendoza of Indio.

Officers responded at 2:43 a.m. Sunday to a report of a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Monroe Street and Requa Avenue, Indio Police Department spokesman Ben Guitron told City News Service.

“(In) one of the vehicles, the driver was still in the driver’s seat unable to get out,” Guitron said. “Indio Cal-Fire was able to remove the driver. He had injuries and was transported to the hospital, where he passed away.”

Mendoza was pronounced dead at 3:16 a.m. Sunday at John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital, according to the coroner’s office.

Guitron added that the other driver was not injured and cooperated with police.

It was not immediately known whether drugs and/or alcohol were factors in the crash as the department’s traffic unit continued their investigation, Guitron said.
