Inmate dies at Cois M. Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta; no foul play suspected

An inmate at the Cois M. Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta has died, though the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office does not suspect foul play.

Just after 10 p.m. Friday, deputies found an unresponsive male inside of a housing unit cell. Custody staff, jail medical personnel and paramedics administered life-saving measures.

Johnnie Curtis Stevens, 40, of Norco, was ultimately pronounced deceased. No further information was provided by the Sheriff’s Office.
